Abstract

Despite the fact that many dermatological diseases exhibit significant morbidity, few of them are associated with mortality. Morbidity, hospitalization time and cost of dermatologic disorders are often discussed in literature. However, there are limited data with regard to mortality. There are few studies in the literature about their rates and risk factors, hindering access to information that could help prevent this outcome. Most studies on mortality from skin diseases are related to some specific conditions. Based on existing data and through a retrospective descriptive study, we will evaluate the deaths in patients admitted to the dermatology ward in the Division of Dermatology at the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo Medical School between 2003 and 2009. Diseases with higher mortality rates will be analyzed. By identifying the main causes of death in these patients and their characteristics, the study can contribute to the expansion of the current knowledge about mortality in dermatology.
