Abstract

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) comprises the conscious, explicit and judicious use of the best current evidence for decision-making concerning individual patient care. It considers the evidence that enables decision-making about individual and collective care and combines scientific findings with patients' clinical experience, concerns and preferences. The principles of Evidence-Based Nursing include careful and explicit decision-making related to nursing care based on the consensus on the most relevant evidence to care service users. Aspects that hinder EPB are understood as barriers, of which the most common are organizational, such as lack of time, absence of mentors and lack of interest by leaders and managers of the work process. It is apprehended that nursing managers also have difficulties in performing their own practice, nursing management, based on evidence that enables managerial decision-making supported on research results. This study aimed at contributing to the work process of administrating/managing nursing care in the realm of evidence-based management, thus providing support to such practice by managing nurses. The objective of the study is: to learn about the meaning of evidence-based nursing to managing nurses. The study will be conducted with a qualitative approach, in the phenomenological perspective, so as to enable the comprehension of the phenomenon. The study subjects will comprise a sufficiently large number of managing nurses from nursing services in order to achieve its objective. The subjects are also expected to agree to participate by signing a Free-Consent Form. The data will be collected by the researcher through non-structured audio-taped interviews using the following guiding question: What does evidence-based nursing management mean to you? The first moment will consist of idiographic analysis, and, at the second moment, nomothetic analysis will be conducted in order to apprehend and unveil the phenomenon by means of themes and discourse interpretation targeted at convergences, divergences and idiosyncrasies. The literature on evidence-based practice and management and health service quality will be used as a theoretical framework. The last step will consist in synthesizing in order to learn about the structure of the phenomenon so as to understand it. (AU)
