Abstract

The salivary lesions, which are considered as originated from the intercalated duct are composed of two cell populations (epithelial and myoepithelial). These lesions are classified in different entities which show morphological overlapping. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and Basal cell adenoma (BCA) are among the benign neoplasias. Recently, a new benign tumoral entity named intercalated duct lesion (IDL) was described, which is composed of epithelial and myoepithelial cells as well. The morphological overlapping between BCAs and IDLs, in addition to the fact that immunoprofile of BCAs has yet to be better explored, led us to study this lesion and its possible relationship with IDLs. Given the critical role of myoepithelial cells in the morphogenesis of lesions related to the intercalated duct, the second objective of the current study is to broad our understanding of factors influencing the immunophenotype and secretion of these cells. Regarding the first objective, 25 ACBs and 8 IDLs will be studied using a panel of monoclonal antibodies; the positivity will be quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed and compared with that in the normal intercalated ducts. In relation to the second, the influence of different proteins of the extra-cellular matrix (matrigel, collagen I and fibronectin) as well as growth factors involved in the tumor genesis will be analyzed using cell culture (EGF e TGF-²).
