Abstract

The international situation has set new challenges for Japanese foreign policy throughout the first decade of the 21th Century. A neighbor, China, emerge on the international situation featuring a remarkable economic growth. Fundamental to the Japanese both politically and economically, relations with China generate consequences for other bilateral axis of major importance: the United States. The challenges arise from the difficulty in dealing with the conflicting demands of these two countries. Facing this situation, the Japanese behavior was passive and reactive. Thus, the objective of this research is to identify the defining factors of this pattern of behavior and Japan's role in the international relations from 2001 to 2010. This is the framework that will guide the research, with focus on reactions to China's rise and the concenquences for relations with the United States.
