Abstract

This is a proposed plan of two combined projects. The first project is a continuation of the work done by me and my PhD supervisor, Prof. Matt Visser, on the topic of highly damped black hole quasi-normal modes (QNMs). We obtained approximate analytical results for different spherically symmetric spacetimes. Now the important issue is to extract some possible information about how our results relate to black hole thermodynamics, with respect to Hod's conjectured connection between the highly damped modes and the black hole area spectrum. We can also try to apply the techniques developed to Kerr and Kerr-Newman spacetimes. The second project will move our work to non-vacuum spacetimes and focus on the magnetized neutron star fluid instabilities. This study should provide us with a better understanding of a possible astrophysical source of observable gravitational radiation that could be detected in the near future by the next generation of gravitational wave detectors.
