Abstract

The insertion of Scientific Literacy (SL) and technology must occur since the early grades of schooling, serving as a basic component of a citizenship education, responsible for the individual's involvement with issues crucial to the development of society. With the inclusion of children six years old in elementary school, thus arose a series of inquiries about the teaching of science in this grade, the central question emerging from this research: "Is it possible to verify evidence of the process of Scientific Literacy in students of the 1st grade of elementary school?". From this questioning, this research will be developed with an essentially qualitative approach and a case study perspective. A didactic sequence will be structured for teaching students will be prepared for this age group, with the proposition of activities divided into three stages (preinquiry, inquiry and postinquiry). From the application of this sequence, three sources of data will be collected and analyzed: the SL indicators, the students' oral arguments and the drawing produced by them (portfolios). The classes will be recorded in audio, video and student's speeches will be transcribed to analyze of argumentative processes, from the identification of SL indicators and epistemological operations. The drawing produced by the students, the portfolios, will be categorized based on a rating scale. The development of skills inherent to the SL will be investigated in order to clarify issues involved directly in science teaching for the early grades. (AU)
