Abstract

The majority of research into Production Planning and Control (PPC) focuses on solutions for large organizations. Despite its increasing importance for the Brazilian economy, Small to Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs), which often operate as Make-to-Order (MTO) job shops, are left behind. In response, this research project sets out to develop a Decision Support System (DSS) based on Workload Control (WLC) to support these enterprises in their daily afford to gain control over their operations. Many studies underline the potential of WLC to reduce Work-In-Process (WIP), shorten lead times and increase the reliability of quoted due dates in the context of SME/MTOs. However, the concept is still unknown and far from being used in Brazil. The practical contribution of this project is the development of a WLC based DSS which, through the means of PPC, allows the competitive potential of Brazil's small to medium sized manufacturing enterprises to be enhanced. In terms of academic contribution, it is expected that the development process of the DSS and the results obtained during this process will lead to: (i) the identification of requirements a PPC should have to reflect the special needs of Brazilian SMEs (by survey); and, (ii) the answer to a series of research questions recently raised in the international WLC literature.
