Abstract

Previous studies have shown cerebrovascular disease as the most common identifiable cause of secondary epilepsy. Only a few studies were done in Brazil to investigate the incidence and the factors associated with the development of seizures in patients after a cerebrovascular accident. The aim of the current research project is to identify the incidence of early and late seizures, and the factors associated with their development. Patients who were admitted in the Emergency Deparment of the Hospital de Clínicas-UNICAMP with a diagnosis of stroke from January 2008 until December 2010 will be included. After the identification of patients using ICD-10 code and the hospital claims database, a chart review will be performed and a general report form will be filled. The Follow-up of patients will be divided in two phases: an early phase corresponding to the first two weeks after the event and a late phase after the first two weeks. The incidence of seizures will be compared between ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. Regression models will be developed to identify independent risk factors associated with the development of seizures in the early and late phase for both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.
