Aquatic ecosystems are the main recipients of toxic substances from human activities. With the increased production of sugar cane (Saccharum sp.) in Brazil, vinasse - main residue of ethanol production - stands out as a potential contaminant of water resources, since its richness in organic matter gives a highly polluting power. For the study of aquatic toxicity, teleost fish have been found to be excellent bioindicators, and the liver being one of the most analyzed organs, due to its high capacity to accumulate contaminants. Thus, this project intends to evaluate the toxicity of vinasse through qualitative analysis of livers of fish Oreochromis niloticus (Cichlidae), exposed to different concentrations of vinasse in laboratory bioassay. Portions of the liver will be collected and fixed, to be analyzed by histological and histochemical techniques to detect proteins, lipids and polysaccharides. (AU)
