Abstract

The expansion of female single household is widespread in several countries. Families’ structure studies had showed that children of single female household families have, on average, worse education and / or health when compared to others. In contrast the advance of intra-family bargaining literature has guided the conduct of policies against poverty, indicating that the cash transfer programs should deliver benefits in mother's hand. That is, in one hand the literature celebrates the comparative advantage of women to care for the offspring, but in another hand states that she alone cannot offer to their children the necessary conditions for them to have good health and academic success. The main issue of current literature dealing with the effects of family structure on children's development is to assess whether the negative association indicated above come from specific characteristics of this type of family composition (women without a husband) or reflects a spurious correlation of other factors not observed. This project aims to analyze the impact of family structure on the health status of poor children in the Brazil with treatment for endogeneity problem of women´s marriage decision. (AU)
