Abstract

This Ph.D. project aims to discuss and reflect comparatively and historically what meant to produce "national" (Lusitanian/Brazilian) rock in the face of the wide diffusion of American and British rock, and the role played by genre and their products in the cultural-political debate about the national and the popular. And interpret which songs provided a set of criticisms towards social and political life in Brazil and Portugal during the 1970's until mid-1980's, reflecting and discussing, in turn, Lusitanian and Brazilian rock in the clash between alienation and politicized.Therefore, this project defends the idea that rock produced in Portuguese language in Brazil and Portugal during the period between 1970 and 1985 expressed and produced musical messages with social and political critics. Becoming, thus, a catalyst and a diffuser of aspirations and worldviews of a part of youth who were not willing to see their expectations about the political and cultural life closed in dichotomies (national/foreign, popular/elitist, capitalism/socialism). Despite it is not recognized by the cultural-political debate, both during the dictatorship and in the course of political redemocratization, as well as in the musical field's memory, which is more commented than studied, rock played a defiant role of behaviors and attitudes in youth to the political and social fields.
