Abstract

This cohort study aims to evaluate the risk of oral diseases and to investigate vulnerability within 3 categories (individual/social/programmatic) in adolescents aged 15 to 19 years old in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. The research consists of two quanti-qualitative phases: in the first phase, data on dental caries, periodontal disease, malocclusion and fluorosis will be collected. The socioeconomic, behavioral, demographic and psychosocial variables will be identified through OIDP, semi-structured and socioeconomic questionnaires. Interviews with those with worse and better dental caries index will also be conducted to investigate vulnerability in its three dimensions - individual, social and programmatic. After 36 months, the procedures of the first phase will be repeated. The probabilistic sample consists of 1428 adolescents from 31 Family Health Units (USF) from Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. The oral examination will be conducted by two trained and calibrated examiners, under artificial light at USF, using a CPI periodontal probe and dental mirror with previous teeth drying. Univariate analysis will be performed using the Chi Square or Fisher tests to evaluate the association between the clinical and socioeconomic, behavioral, demographic and psychosocial factors. Next, Poisson regression analysis will be performed to identify the risk variables of oral diseases. The interviews will be transcribed maintaining the fidelity speech. Then carefully reading of the transcribed material will be performed in order to identify an initial set of themes or categories (search for recurring themes and items of interest, such as: unusual viewpoints, particular types of narratives). Data will be grouped according to the categories emerging from the text. Data items that fit more than one category will be connected using the software NVivo ® enabling to identify key themes that will be tabulated for a thematic analysis of data. (AU)
