Abstract

This project aims to analyze the funtion and the pattern of use of the particles gár and allá, more especifically when they appear together in the combination allà gár. Also the cases of other elements being inserted in the middle of the combination will be taken into consideration, as long as the syntactic and morphological connection of the two particles remains intact. The seven surviving tragedies of Sophocles will serve as a corpus for the analysis, due to their higher frequency of the given combination of particles compared to the works of Aeschylus or Euripides. With the support of The Greek Particles (1954), by J. D. Denniston, which is considered to be the most important study on this topic, and also of some more recent studies, mainly from the University of Amsterdam, my work aims to chart the diversity of meanings, the syntactic values, the pattern of use and everything else that could be relevant in a full and detailed approach to the greek particles, focusing in a small piece of a wide topic: the combination of the particles allà gár.
