Abstract

In this work we propose to translate and annotate the second book of the Tri-kandi, written by the Indian grammarian and language philosopher Bhartr-hari (5th century CE.), together with the commentary attributed to Punya-raja (10th century). Thereby we intend to put together in Portuguese a corpus of Sanskrit works dedicated to thinking about language. This body of translated texts will be accompanied by an introduction and critical notes designed as reading tools primarily for the non specialist. In our Dissertation we translated the first book of the Tri-kandi, regarded as a companion of the native tradition on linguistic thinking, together with its first commentary, composed by the same Bhartr-hari. There we also presented an overview of the author's and his commentators' works, as well as a study on the peculiarities of Bhartr-harfs prose style. The present work deals with the second of the Tri-kandi's three book. In it the author closely analyses the Iraditional theories on the nature of meaning. Punya-raja's Vakya-kanda-tika is its only complete commentary. The work is intended to be presented to the public in book form. (AU)
