Abstract

In this Research Project, I intend to analyze the history and factors that led public education administrators during the republican period to invest on travel of educators initially to Europe, and later to the United States of America. The questions are: Who were these educators? Why were they selected? What was their purpose of studying abroad? What was the deployment of this for the education of Brazil. What categories of educators traveled more? Were they university students, high school students, primary pupils, the specialists (guides, inspectors, educational administrators)? The analysis and reflections of these questions help to understand the influences, appropriations and possible readings of a foreign educational model of the Brazilian educational field and the formation and role of educators in their trips around public education. The choice of this theme is justified in that historiographical studies have focused their interest in research regarding the travels by educators and the texts written and produced by them, which include speeches, representations and images of society, culture, education, customs, values and ideas. From the comparisons, the travelers zoom in and out different backgrounds, adopt postures and take positions. According to Gondra (2007,pg. 65) travel is a strategy to complement the limits imposed by the written records. It appears as ''methodological recommendation and how to complement the effort of understanding the foreigner and, in particular, the solutions in the field of education".
