Abstract

The present research aims to study the construction of social and political representations about the school, the models and the teaching systems forged in the post-abolition transnational circuit by black educators in Brazil and the USA. The interest is centered on the investigation of the forms and paths - symmetrical or not - through which such connections and circulation of ideas, thoughts and projects took place. Thus, the trajectory of the black Brazilian thinker José Eutrópio (1884-1929) and the dialogues and oppositions established by him with black American educators are chosen, especially with the work and thought of Carter Godwin Woodson (1875-1950), as a vehicle through which we intend to study how the process of public discussion on the racial issue took place, especially on practices of racialization and racism in schools and on the access to forms of formal schooling of black people to such spaces in the post-abolition period in transnational scope. The hypothesis is defended that, for black people in different parts of the Atlantic, the school - in a concrete or symbolic way - was seen as a channel of expression of their struggles around equality and recognition of humanity and dignity and, therefore, of their citizenship. Linked to the Thematic Project "Saberes e práticas em fronteiras: por uma história transnacional da educação (1810-...)", set in motion at the Faculdade de Educação of the Universidade de São Paulo, this proposal is interested in reflecting on international transits, the hybridizations and appropriations and the processes of transnational circulation of subjects, artifacts, models and pedagogical knowledge, as well as the strategies mobilized in the construction of these social networks. To this end, the proposal presents a research perspective also in a transnational sense, based on investigations in archives, collections and libraries and on the establishment of historiographical dialogues in Brazil and the USA.
