Abstract

The squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common types of skin cancer non-melanoma in both animals and humans, it is caused mainly by ultraviolet radiation. The photodynamic therapy (PDT) is used clinically to treat a range of malignancies. This therapy uses photosensitizing molecules (PS) in the target tissue followed by irradiation with light, mainly in the red spectrum of visible light (>630 nm). The wavelength of the light source needs to be appropriate to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and/or singlet oxygen (1O2) that are able of causing the tumor death. One of the death mechanisms is the immune system activation. The main constituents of cellular immunity against cancer development are performed by the activation of T lymphocytes: helper (CD4+) and cytotoxic T (CD8+) as well as antigen-presenting cells (APCs) whose cells lead in the T cells activation, and in the skin this function is carried out by Langerhans cells. Moreover, cytokine secretions such as IL-1, TNF-alpha and IL-2 play an important role in the cancer development as well as in the immune response activation against cancer. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the mechanisms of action of PDT in an experimental model of SCC in vivo in the cellular immune response. (AU)
