Literature in didactic books of Portuguese language (1964-1984)

Abstract

This project proposes an investigation of how Literature content was dealt with in didactic materials in Portuguese, in books dating from 1964 to 1984, the time through which Brazil was ruled by the Military Government regime. The focus is to analyze how the manuals are organized now, identifying the official efforts towards the edition of this material for High School students, and how those texts were used to teach Literature back then. The object and main source of this research is the book series "Português no colégio para 1º e 2º anos" (Portuguese at High School for 1st and 2nd years) and "Português no colégio para o 3º ano" (Portuguese at High School for 3rd year), published in Sao Paulo in 1970, by Raul Moreira Léllis. These texts represent the production of the time and allow us to perceive how Literature was studied by every High School student, throughout its 3 years. The study on these titles, their content, materiality, and production might be supported by important research works in the area, such as the ones by Chartier (1990), Choppin (2004), Chervel (1990), Oliveira (1083, 1984 and 1986) and Silva and Correia (2004). It is also important to propose an articulation between Léllis' book and the issues involved in the edition of didactic works during the moment in time in question, in addition to the High School Portuguese language program. It is essential to take these aspects into account since they are necessary to fully understand the Portuguese in High School as a product, but also, at the same time, as a producer of editorial and scholarly initiatives.
