Abstract

Mixed oxides activated by lanthanide ions can be excited via photons or high energy radiation (X and g-rays), so they are considered as promising phosphors and scintillators due to efficient light emission. In this project we aim to prepare three mixed oxides, namely gadolinium and aluminum oxide (GdAlO3), yttrium and aluminum oxide (Y3Al5O12), and yttrium and vanadium oxide (YVO4) by means of the non-hydrolytic sol gel route. This route was chosen because it generally leads to more homogeneous mixed oxides using low temperatures. These oxides will be sensitized by Bi3+ ions and activated by the lanthanide ions Eu3+, Tb3+, and Tm3+, which should culminate in emission of the colors red, green, and blue, respectively. Investigation of the energy transfer from the sensitizer to the activator as well as of the formation of mixed oxides will be conducted by thermal analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission, spectroscopy in the infrared region, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence, lifetime, and luminescence quantum yield calculations.
