Abstract From the analysis of theoretical texts and letters written by the American artist rooted in England, James McNeill Whistler, together with the catalog of his paintings and newspaper of the time, documents presented in his book The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, it is intended to observe the development process of the artist within the European art market in the second half of the nineteenth century, as well as his positions and resolutions on the internal paradoxes of art-market system. To do this, I will examine the functioning of market mechanisms and institutions of art of the period in relation to its ideological and economic aspects. These will be analyzed in conjunction with the factors that influence the inclusion of Whistler within this market and active relationship of the artist in this sense. Through this research, I intend to observe how systems and institutions of nineteenth-century art have been absorbed, modified and discussed by an artist who, not being an European, was able to enter this market in a unique and unprecedented way. Following the indication of the earlier opinion, the sources were selected and the period was cut to the viability of the project was not impaired. | |
