Abstract

With the development of Information and Communication Technologies, Information Science has been forced to rethink the traditional posture of informational management. Hypertext, arising mainly through the Web environment, further increased the complexity of the information treatment. The popularization of the Internet has opened a new phase of the Web: Web 2.0 or Social web. One feature of Social web is the growing use of wikis for managing informational collaboratively. Conceived by Tim Berners-Lee, there is the proposal of the Semantic Web in which machines are able to analyze data on the network. In this context arises semantic wikis: wikis characterized by making use of semantic web technologies. Therefore, we believe that Information Science, which is already worried about the development of the Social Web and the Semantic Web, should also worry about semantic social environments, as is the case of semantic wikis. Thus, by means of descriptive and exploratory research, the objective is to explore, analyze and present the characteristics of semantic wikis focused on the activities of representation, retrieval and exchange of information supported by semantic Web technologies in order to facilitate the understanding, discussion, recommendation and use of these technologies in digital information environments.
