Abstract

The distribution of spiders that build orbicular webs is directly associated with physical and biological factors. Thus, factors such altitude, light intensity, temperature, humidity, spatial structure of habitat, as well as the interactions with other organisms such as the relationship between prey and predators, can result in choice of substrates suitable for establishment of spiders. The species to be studied, Eustala taquara belongs to the family Araneidae, one of the main constructor groups of orbicular webs. These spiders inhabit bushes and twigs on the edge of woods and trails, and are difficult to see in their natural environment as they become cryptic due to coloration and patterns of placement in the dry vegetation. The combination of these factors possibly conferring protection against visually oriented predators such parasitic wasps. Due to lack of data on the biology and ecology of this specie, this study aims to elucidate these aspects of the natural history of Eustala taquara, which have occurred in the Serra do Japi - Jundiaí, interior of São Paulo.
