Abstract

This project will study the dynamics of aesthetic elements in long takes, looking specifically at how sound, articulated to the mise-en-scène process, can expand meanings and evoke a certain space-time poetic present in any numbers of contemporary movies. Understanding the sound portion of the film as a constituent of the style of some filmmakers, we will analyze sequences of Japón (2002), Battle in Heaven (2005) and Silent Light (2007), from the mexican director Carlos Reygadas, seeking to contribute to studies about sound on film. Our approach will start from the David Bordwell's analysis about staging and style in film and on the functioning of the long take, to then, dialogue with some of Michel Chion theoretical assumptions about the aesthetic and narrative possibilities of sound.
