Abstract

This research has as its object the justification of individual rights that protect the private lives of individuals in the egaliatarian liberalism of Ronald Dworkin. The hypothesis to be explored is that Dworkin presents a liberal justification founded in a conception of ethics, understood ethics for Dworkin as the "study of how to live well, and morality (&) [as] the study of how we must treat other people" (Dworkin in Justice for Hedgehogs, Cambridge(Massachusetts)/London:The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 2011, p. 13). By justifying such rights in these terms, Dworkin presents an argument capable of overcoming the critiques addressed to a non-ethical reading of his liberalism, notably the reading made by natural lawyer John Finnis.
