Abstract

The use of plant products to replace fossil fuel still generates some controversy. With the expansion of cultivation of sugar cane for ethanol production, there is an increased use of nitrogen fertilizers to increase agricultural productivity, seeking to meet market needs. However, these nutrients applied to crops will affect not only production but also have implications for water quality in basins that fall within these plantations. In order to evaluate these impacts, it is hoped will equip a watershed located in the river basin Corumbataí, Piracicaba - SP, with great distinction in the Brazilian sugar and alcohol, so that it becomes possible to characterize the hydrological processes, observing the movement of water between the different compartments of the environment, and understanding the dynamics of nitrogen in order to identify the hydrological processes that carry greater amounts of this element, and the molecular form in which it is found, providing the basis for assessing the ecological effects of the use of nitrogen in plantations of sugar cane.
