Abstract

Sugarcane is a crop of major socio-economic conditions in Brazil, assuming increasingly important role in the global scenario. Rainfall interception by the canopy of this culture has been shown to be important in terms of water balance. In this sense, hydrological models that measure the interception losses, evaluating different combinations of events and making possible the comparison of numerous types of vegetation cover in different environments, get great importance. The analytical model adapted developed by Dijk and Bruijnzeel (2001a) was able to simulate these losses in a mixed farming system, involving cassava, maize and rice in Indonesia, requiring its application to other types of vegetation and climate regimes. Thus, leading objectives of this research internship abroad have to apply the model of Dijk and Bruijnzeel (2001a) on sugarcane, as well as their assessment and validation by comparing the data obtained in the field collected as part of the master dissertation, with those obtained through the model. The motivation for the proposal scholarship is also due to the fact that this will be developed at Australian Research Centre, ANU (Australian National University), specifically with the Professor Albert Van Dijk owner of model and his work group.
