Abstract

Large amount of sugarcane bagasse ash is produced in São Paulo state. It has been disposed on soil, without technical criteria. In this context, it is crucial the development of studies that characterize this residue and its effects on soil and plant growth. Thus, the current study will evaluate its potential for use in agriculture, focusing on citrus. It is known that alternative managements of the soil may alter carbon sequestration and reduce CO2 emission from the soil, minimizing the potential global warming. The objectives of this study, which was set up on May, 2011, are: evaluate the effects of sugarcane bagasse ash application on the chemical attributes of the soil, emission of CO2 from the soil, nutritional status and development of young valencia orange trees. The experimental design used was randomized blocks with five treatments, consisting of doses of sugarcane bagasse ash (0, 5, 10, 20 e 40 tons/ha on dry basis), applied on the soil surface, with five replicates. Chemical analyses of the soil, as well as evaluation of nutritional status and development of orange trees will be done 12 months after the application of the treatments. Measurements of CO2 emission from soil and physiological parameters of the plants in response to the studied treatments will be conducted in two periods: spring (September-November) and winter (June-August). The result of this research will help to define better strategies for use of waste ash in agricultural production systems, focusing on citrus. (AU)
