Abstract

The production of written texts depends on the basic domain of the alphabetical code and the orthographic norms and it is also related to the knowledge of the structure of different genres of text, as well as the attention to their internal cohesion and coherence. Observing the complexity of writing's learning, that involves the development of phonological, morphosyntactic and textual awareness, and the permanence of the difficulties presented for many children through the scholar life, the general objective of this research is to investigate the relationship between orthographic knowledge and text production in 72 pupils of 5th year of basic education. We intend also to investigate if different conditions of production affect the quality of the written texts. The data will be collected through a collective situation of written words to evaluate the orthographic abilities and three situations of text production: (1) free thematic; (2) supported by figures; (3) after hearing to a previous story. The data will be analyzed in function of the nature and frequency of the orthographic errors and the classification of the texts in different categories. Statistical analyses will be made to measure the differences of performance between the groups with and without learning difficulties and to identify the relationship between orthographic and text structural aspects. The analysis of the most frequent errors and the quality of texts will also allow make inferences on the gaps of abilities and/or knowledge that would be in the origin of the difficulties, thus contributing for the planning of pedagogical strategies aiming to their overcoming.
