Abstract

The ability to innovate through new product development is, among the basic capabilities of organizations, one of which confers a greater competitive advantage, for being hard to imitate (SLATER, 1996). New products development process can be considered a business process, and, as for these processes, models are central to its representation, understanding, design, management and improvement. Reference models representation ways plays a critical role in new product development process, while acting as moderator of its effectiveness in achieving its primary purpose (BROWNING, 2007). Previous research has indicated better representation ways as a key factor in improving the models performance in support of decision making during product development. This study aims to identify which ways of representing the new products development process are most suitable for this purpose. For this end, we intend to conduct a multiple case study, assessing prototypes developed from the insertion of the contents of Rozenfeld et al. (2006) reference model in different forms of representation, selected from a systematic literature review. These prototypes will be assessed by managers through structured interviews. As results, we expect to obtain the main advantages and disadvantages of the representation ways evaluated, as well as its requirements to support decision making.
