Abstract

In recent years, the Brazilian labour market has exhibited some quite unnusual and very interesting trends. Since 2004, the unemployment rate has declined to half of its level in that year; the minimum wage has showed real growth of almost 70%; the inequality measured by the Gini index has significantly decreased, and the formal share of employment has increased, reaching levels historically high. From this background, we aim to answer the following questions: 1. What are the effects of minimum wage on wage inequality in the labour market? 2. What explains the decresing informal share of employment, in a context in which minimum wage grows and unemployment decreases? (AU)
