Abstract

With current environmental concerns and a need to understand the processes that govern the water and solutes movement in soils, studies are needed to increase the efficiency of inputs used in agriculture, and to reduce the impact of solute transport on groundwater. Therefore, this project aims to characterize the variances of nitrate transport parameters, by developing Breakthrough Curves (BTC's)for disturbed and undisturbed soils samples, resulting from the application of four nitrate sources on two tropical soils. The data will also be used to determine the influence of accompanying ions on nitrate transport. Nitrate transport parameters will be obtained by using the STANMOD model to fit equations to the BTC's.
