Abstract

Body balance is one of the impaired motor functions following stroke. The side of occurrence of the neural lesion has been shown to affect differentially postural control, revealing functional asymmetries between the right and left hemispheres in body balance. This study aims at comparing reactive postural responses in post stroke individuals with lesions to the right versus left hemispheres, considering the lesioned neural area. In the proposed experiment individuals with moderate stroke at the cerebellum or occipital cortex in one of the cerebral hemispheres and a group of healthy individuals paired by age will have their stance perturbed by manual load release. Postural recovery analysis will be made through posturography based on center of pressure and electromyography of anterior distal muscles of the paretic and healthy legs.
