Abstract

The major route of infection by HIV-1 in children is the mother-to-child transmission (MCT) and a variety of factors such as viral, maternal and behavioral could be associated on the determination of MCT of HIV-1. The HLA-E molecule has been implied in the mother-to-child immunologic interactions and is selectively expressed on the plancetal cells, specifically on extravillous trophoblasts, forming the layer responsible for the maternal-fetal tissue interface and has been associated to the tolerance to fetus and to the pregnancy maintenance, protecting the fetus from the maternal immunologic assaults. This molecule, still poorly characterized, performs an important role in maternal tolerance to embryo's cells, because HLA-E has an important interaction with CD94/NKG2 receptors, inhibiting the killing activity of NK cells. Considering the little studies evaluating HLA-E molecules, known in the maternal-fetal immunologic interaction, this project aims to investigate the expression of these molecules in placental tissues of HIV-1 infected and non-infected women. It is an tranversal and descriptive study, including 100 HIV-1 infected and 100 non-infected women, selected in the Ambulatório de Moléstias Infecciosas - AMIGO, in the Hospital das Clínicas de Ribeirão Preto and in the Centro de Referência em Saúde da Mulher - Mater, respectively. The analysis will be done by immunohistochemical of the placental tissues. This project were subjected and approved by Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da Escola de Enfermagem de Ribeirão Preto - USP.
