Abstract

Introduction: the healthcare-associated infections (HAI) have been considered a serious public health problem in Brazil and worldwide affecting the public healthcare systems and patients. Surgical Site Infections (SSI) are among the most frequent HAI in the healthcare facilities. Epidemiological surveillance is considered as an essential strategy for the prevention of IRAS. National authorities should establish priorities for the surveillance of the SSI and select data to be reported to health authorities. Objectives: to identify indicators to enabling a review in the SSI surveillance system of São Paulo State to propose improvements to this system in partnership with the Hospital Infection Division of the Centro de Vigilância Epidemiológica de São Paulo (DIH-CVE). Methods: The selection of indicators will be carried out by means of a literature review from on line data base scientific literature and on web page of the governmental health authorities of selected countries. After the selection of indicators, a plan of improvement for SSI surveillance system will be developed. The plan implementation and follow-up will be carried out with partnership with DIH-CVE. An evaluation will be held following a 12 months period, aiming to identifying adhesion rates from hospitals and the results from the selected indicators. (AU)
