Abstract

This project intends to analyze the protagonists' paths in two novels, which present a common point: the oppression that arose in a specific setting, a boarding school. The above-mentioned novels are O Ateneu by Raul Pompeia and The time of the hero by Mario Vargas Llosa. More specifically, our aim is to investigate the portrait of these boarding schools as a total institution - a concept defined by Goffman -, because, ultimately, it is the portrait of a coercive space of confinement, that brings about the individual struggle with the institution and the other characters.(AU)
