Abstract

The development of a product that is able to transport oxygen to the tissues and also to control hypovolemia on trauma patients (commonly known as blood substitutes) will cause a great impact on trauma treatment and on surgical interventions. Hemorrhage is the major cause of death after serious accidents and blood volume control is the major priority on such situations. Transfusion may also be impacted by such product because many complications are related to the therapeutic application of blood. The main issue related to the usage of blood is the risk of pathogenic agents transmission (such as HIV, HBV, HCV, CMV, etc.). Complications related to imunomodulation may also occur with the therapeutic use of blood thus increasing the risk of infection as well as acute lung injury and severe hemolytic reactions. In addition concern arises from the disparity between donation rate and the increasing demand. In this context, this project aims to contribute to the scientific development by initiating the development of a new blood substitute. The main objectives of the project are to extract and purify bovine hemoglobin, to polymerize this hemoglobin (with glutaraldehyde, a succinimidic derivate of polyethylene glycol and phenylethydildiepoxide) and to structure the resulting polymer (with polylatic acid and polyethylene glycol).
