Abstract

The citrus canker, caused by the bacterium X. axonopodis pv. citri, is an incurable disease that causes serious problems for the world citriculture, especially the orange plantations. The only way to eliminate the disease, since there is no adequate chemical control is the eradication of infected plants and plants suspicion. A further step to reduce the amount of inoculum of bacteria has been used by spraying copper-based. While sequencing the genome of X. axonopodis pv. citri has been completed, there is still no satisfactory control measures that may be recommended for this pathosystem. An alternative to growth inhibition, which is the mode of action of most traditional antibiotics, may be the attenuation of virulence factor production. Thus, an analysis of the metabolic events underlying bacterial cell-cell communication of signaling molecules may contribute to understanding of the virulence factor and consequently control the disease. In addition, there is a need in the search for new methods quick and easy for the identification and diagnostic of bacteria. Thus, the aims this project is to make the chemical study of X. axonopodis pv. citri in order to understand the chemical aspects involved in the development of bacteria, looking for possible signaling molecules of the virulence factor and make the study of production of volatiles in orange pear, Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck, with symptoms of citrus canker using Solid Phase Microextration (SPME) and dynamic headspace associated with GC-MS.
