Abstract

Preliminary results obtained by the applicant show that hydrated adult rats with history of sodium depletion have enhanced sugar intake in tests of spontaneous ingestion of sucrose (hedonic test), thus suggesting cross sensitization between sodium depletion and sucrose intake. The objective of the present project is to find out if episodic sodium depletion (furosemide combined with removal of ambient sodium) has selective effect on sucrose intake as compared to food chow intake and if it is reciprocally reinforced by history of sucrose intake. In addition, the project also proposes to test if the enhanced sugar intake can be eliminated by parenteral sodium replacement performed at the end of sodium depletions. (AU)
