Abstract

The commercial utilization of ionic liquids is of increasing importance, mainly due their termpohysical properties, such as their low vapor pressure, which make these compounds environmentally benign when compared with traditional solvents. For this reason, this kind of solvents has received special attention by process development researchers. Ionic liquids are composed of large organic cations and relatively small anions; that allows the fine tuning of their properties by a careful selection of these cations and anions. These properties make ionic liquids adequate solvents, able to replace most of the traditional organic solvents used by chemical industries. Liquid-liquid equilibrium data (LLE) for multicomponent systems including ionic liquids, although essential for the design and operation of separation processes, are still scarce. This project has as objective the synthesis of ammonium-based ionic liquids, from monoethanolamine and organic acids (butanoic, pentanoic and hexanoic), by using a technique described by Álvarez et al. (2010). From the three obtained ionic liquids, 2-hydroxy ethylammonium butanoate, 2-hydroxy ethylammonium pentanoate, and 2-hydroxy ethylammonium hexanoate, ternary systems composed of water + ionic liquid + organic solvent will be studied for the determination of liquid-liquid equilibrium data. The organic solvents studied include esters and aliphatic hydrocarbons. The thermodynamic models NRTL and ASOG will be used to correlate and predict the obtained data.
