Abstract This project aims at studying a group of images wrought out by the critic and English essay writer William Hazlitt (1778-1830) which bounds prose writing to the texture of the soil and the topographical accidents, unified on the metaphor - recurrent on his work - "the ground of prose". Our point of departure is the opening essay "On the prose-style of poets" to The Plain Speaker (1826), Hazlitt's last essay compilation. In this essay the author solidifies some of the main themes on the connection of art and criticism - subject which he has applied himself on for nearly three decades of an intense career as essay writer. From Hazlitt's notion that the use of concepts when not carved on images can never define the task of the critic, our hypothesis is that there is an analogy between critical essay writing and the difficulties intermingled on the artist's making. | |
