Abstract

In health care, increasingly, there is a need to analyze the individual as a whole and not in part, especially in the field of Dentistry. For this reason in recent years, there was renewed interest in the systemic effects of oral infections and periodontal diseases. Periodontal disease can not be seen as a problem that affects only the supporting tissues of teeth, often has several inter-relations and direct two-way with other systemic diseases, including diabetes. Diabetes is a metabolic syndrome and acts by promoting diverse manifestations in various systems. In this disease, the production of insulin by the pancreas virtually and, consequently, a person has chronic hyperglycemia. Periodontal disease is identified as the sixth complication of diabetes. In the association enters the two diseases, the immune response patients have difficulty, periodontal disease develops so exaggeratedly, there is an increased amount of inflammatory mediators, which increase the release of osteoclasts, promoting bone resorption and increased collagenase, which favors greater destruction of the periodontal ligament fibers. Fibroblasts are support cells of the periodontium, as they produce and modify the extracellular matrix and present a role in regulating tissue integrity and homeostasis. These cells when activated are capable of releasing cytokines, chemokines, and lipid derivatives modifying the tissue repair process. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the mechanisms involved in the activation of gingival fibroblasts in diabetic animals for the production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), more specifically MMP-9.(AU)
