Abstract

Stuttering is a multidimensional communication disturbance in which many factors as biological, psychological and social interact in a complex way and may influence the personal development and the individual social interactions. Many feelings and negative attitudes related to the stuttering were described in the literature, as negation, passivity, lack of hope, guilt, embarrassment, shyness, shame and fear related to speaking, anxiety, frustration and anger. This study has as its main goal investigating the social and behavioral profile of stutterers according to their parents' opinion and comparing them to people with fluent controls. We will assess 60 individuals, between the ages of 6 and 8 years old, from both genders, who speak Brazilian Portuguese; 30 individuals have Persistent Developmental Stuttering, and 30 individuals have fluent controls. In order to respond to the aim, we will apply the behavioral inventory Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), which contains138 items, 20 items for the assessment of social competence of the child or teenager, and 118 for the assessment of their behavior problems according to parents' perception. The data will be analyzed by using the Software Assessment Data Manager (ADM) that is a program developed to the correction of the CBCL. The data from CBCL, provided in Excel worksheet, will be transferred from the ADM for statistical descriptive and parametric comparative analysis by using the program SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) in its version 13.0.
