Abstract

By and large, one can say that, strutured around a memorialist narrator, O Ateneu, novel written by Raul Pompéia in 1888 and published the same year in Gazeta de Notícias, has aroused a number of contradictions regarding its narrative technique in the novel's critical reception, understood either as the author's discourse (Sérgio-Raul), either as a narration strictly attached to Brazil's Second Reign (Ateneu-Brazil). To this effect, the main concern of this research is to place and discuss this narrator's complex role in the novel, noting the memorialistic dynamics established between the narration's present and the diegesis' past. In order to do so, this research intends to develop a general theorical discussion on memoralistic narrative and a deep analysis of O Ateneu's critical reception, base parameters for the subsequent analysis of its narrative.
