Abstract

The Presidential Council of the Province of São Paulo was one of the new provincial governments created by the Constituent Assembly of 1823, which had as one of its responsibilities to promote the catechesis of the Indians. At that time, among the issues to the political organization of the recently independent country, the Indian question was an important topic discussed by the imperial and provincial, of the strong presence of Indians in various parts of the country and the absence of a general Indian policy made it necessary to discuss and redefine attitudes to deal with the native. The present work aims to analyze the content of political opinions and projects of members of the Presidency of the Province of São Paulo, for the Indians, during the First Empire of Brazil (1822-1831). For this, we used the minutes of Council meetings in São Paulo during this period. In a complementary manner, will be used the indigenous project of José Bonifácio, written in 1823, and indigenous legislation of the nineteenth century. Through these sources, it Will seek to understand how the indigenous issue was politically conceived by the provincial authorities at a time when, despite the debates on the issue, there was an Indian general regulation that could be used as a reference.(AU)
