Abstract

This project is aimed to analyze the construction of the Indian social place during the period of Brazilian national state formation, displaying as its cohesive element about our questions the Diretório dos Índios, which was repealed for the Grand-Pará and Maranhão through the Royal Letter of 1798, but in activity in Ceará until 1845. Through this law, we intend to characterize the ways in which the administrators and Indians used it in order to build this social context, through readings and appropriations of their articles in the search for achieving their interests. This research is also focused on the investigation of these discourses about Indians' inclusion and exclusion in the new Brazilian nation and in the citizen corps of the country, as well as the conflicts and transformation processes of identity groups and indigenous individuals throughout this period. As the specific locus of our analyses, we have chosen the villages of Indians of the captaincy and then the province of Ceará, searching for the ways in which indigenous groups in their relations with authorities and other non-Indians, turn these spaces into stage of political, daily and identity disputes.
