Abstract

The promulgation of the Royal Letter of 1798, which revoked the directory of the Indians, resulted in no significant effect in the territory of Ceará. When Pombalina law was finally repealed in Ceará in 1845, it was replaced by the Missions Regulation and it became the first indigenous general law of the Brazilian empire. In this context of Old Regime crisis and with the formation of the national State, social relationships have changed alongside legal and regulatory renewal and multiple armed conflicts. The legislation involving this period is investigated in this study as it defined the clashes between Indians and indigenous policies regarding the social portrayal of these populations. In contrast, the war issue reveals equal evidence. Security has always been one of the main functions of indigenous people that are socially integrated into the Portuguese Empire. The Indians represent more than mere labour for the State service (Lusitanian or Brazilian) either in war or law, standing during political conflict events and demonstrating their interests and expectations. This work aims to analyse the transformation of these political conditions of the Indians in Ceará, considering the relationship between the laws during this period and the Indians, the passage of the category from subjects of the Portuguese monarchy for Brazilian citizens and the implications in the Indian's claims in regard to their legal conditions, rights and to their role in military events (AU)
