Abstract

The present project aims at investigating the effects of disorder, invariably present in real systems, on crack propagation in media subject to cyclic-load fatigue. Based on recent work [A. P. Vieira, J. S. Andrade, H. J. Herrmann, Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 195503 (2008)], it is possible to start from a micrometric approach in order to analyze the relation between a local damage-accumulation rule in the material and the phenomenological Paris law, which establishes that the crack velocity is proportional to a power of the change in the stress-intensity factor, and is widely used in engineering practice to estimate the lifetime of parts working under fatigue. The damage-accumulation rule is inspired by ideas of self-similarity, and crack propagation is studied via numerical approaches, combined with analytical results.
