Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is the most prevalent metabolic disease both in Brazil and the rest of the World and has several short, medium, and long-term complications. Pathologic changes in diabetic retinopathy are both macroangiopathic and microangiopathic. The disease is divided into proliferative and nonproliferative, both being responsible for much of the incidence of blindness worldwide. One of the factors that stimulate the proliferation of retinal vessels is VEGF, induced by chronic hypoxia as a late complication of Diabetes mellitus. Currently, there are several experimental models studied for the development of retinal neovascularization and diabetic retinopathy. This study's objective is to develop a rabbit model of proliferative retinopathy by the intravitreal injection of VEGF and analyze the action of a drug in the prevention and recovery of complications caused by the action of this pro-angiogenic protein.(AU)
