Abstract

True freshwater brachyuran crabs account for about 1300 species worldwide. There are two families of true freshwater crabs in the neotropics: Trichodactylidae and Pseudothelphusidae. Currently, pseudothelphusids comprise 40 genera and about 280 species and subspecies in 2 subfamilies and 5 tribes. The tribe Kingsleyini Bott, 1970, includes about 50 species and subspecies in 12 genera, whose geographical distribution encompasses the oriental slope of Andes and the Amazon Basin (Brazil, Colombia, Guianas, Peru, Venezuela, and Suriname) and the Lesser Antilles. While knowledge of the pseudothelphusid taxonomic diversity broadened substantially in the last few decades, their phylogenetic relationships remain poorly understood. To reduce this gap we propose a phylogenetic analysis for assessing monophyly and relationships within the tribe Kingsleyini. Additionally we describe a number of new species in different genera.
