Abstract This project aims to investigate and highlight the "concept of literary criticism of Friedrich Schlegel". Our thesis seeks to demonstrate how the German critic, philosopher and philologist contributed for a change in the studies of literature of his age by doing a synthesis between the aesthetic and historical vision of the literary phenomena. By using the paradigms of the philosophy of history and aesthetics for the understanding of different periods or ages of literary art, Schlegel did an important change in the way how criticism started to evaluate literature. From his dialog with the heritage of the Enlightenment, as well as with the writings of Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich Schiller, Immanuel Kant, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Joachim Winckelmann e Johann Wolfgang Goethe, the critic would develop a new modus faciendi of literary criticism which takes into consideration the reflexive and creative activity of the critical spirit. In the conception of Friedrich Schlegel, literary criticism meant the constant search for the infinite perfectibility, for the complementation of the literary opus and the philosophical reflexion, where the critic should be an author in second grade. As a constitutive part of the origins of the western literary criticism, the "aesthetic revolution" which Friedrich Schlegel introduced at the studies and the literary criticism is a synthesis and a revelation of a chain of revolutions that started at the natural sciences, passing into the field of economy, politics until it reached the core of the literary studies.
